Difference between a Hot Cast and Cold Cast Bronze

There have been a number of questions concerning the difference between a Hot Cast and Cold Cast Bronze.

Short and sweet version: Hot Cast is Metal and Cold Cast is Resin.

Both forms are usually made from a mould using rubber and plaster which is taken from the original clay or wax sculpture. So both forms make exactly the same sculpture, but from different materials.

Hot Cast Bronze is actually made from molten metal using primarily the lost wax process. Other forms of casting are available like sand. This is dependant on the item being produced. Bronze metal is a blend of copper and tin along with other metals to give different characteristics to the final product.

Cold Cast Bronze is actually made from a polyester epoxy resin blended with bronze powder for colouring. In some instances the final product may be painted in a bronze powder paint.

In general, Hot Cast Bronzes are costly and time consuming in production whilst Cold Casting allows mass production at a far lower cost as expected by todays consumer in the price paid for an item.
